Abstract Investigates work characteristics, individual abilities, and the generalized and professional sense of competence (GSoC and PSoC) in computer professionals and others. GSoC and PSoC are interrelated. Positive work characteristics tend to accumulate in the superiors' work. Sources of strain at work are associated with both GSoC and PSoC: those subjects with a strong sense of competence (SoC) also reported fewer sources of strain at work. Information overload is a problem that is characteristic of computer professionals. It is related to symptoms of burnout, and an association with GSoC and PSoC was noted, although it remained relatively weak. It is possible that the impact of information overload on the SoC is moderated by organizational position, which seemed to be a factor causing an uneven distribution of such positive features of work that may increase opportunities to cope. However, the selection effect of people with a stronger SoC getting the best jobs cannot be disregarded. Measures for decreasing the sources of strain at work are needed in order to strengthen the SoC in computer jobs. Computer professionals are working in a field which is developing very fast. It takes a lot of motivation and SoC to cope with all the extra work involved in self-studying for innovation and learning new methods, as well as getting more formal vocational education. Even a new orientation in the development of qualifications might be needed, such as the development of social skills and cooperation with clients. (5 References). Subject Headings Personnel.
