Abstract Burnout is a three-component syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and feelings of low personal accomplishment. Although burnout has been studied almost exclusively with helping professionals, its importance as an organizational phenomenon is indicated by the potential costs associated with the resulting personal and organizational dysfunction. Results of this study indicate that burnout affects employees in diverse occupations. Interpersonal interactions are significant contributors to burnout, although the effect is generally opposite that previously reported. Job and role, organizational, and personal variables are all related to burnout. (3 References). Subject Headings Management. Personnel.
